Good Company Can Turn Anyone's Life Around

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਪੜਿ ਸੂਆ ਗਨਕ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
sangat kaa gun bahut aDhikaa-ee parh soo-aa ganak uDhaaray.
The virtues of the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, are so very great. Even the prostitute was saved, by teaching the parrot to speak the Lord's Name.

paras napras bha-ay kubijaa ka-o lai baikunth siDhaaray. ||1||
Krishna was pleased, and so he touched the hunch-back Kubija, and she was transported to the heavens. ||1||

In plain words

Good company is so powerful that it can turn anyone's life around.

Even a woman the world looked down on was lifted up. She just taught her parrot to say the Name.

Krishna was pleased and touched Kubija, a woman with a bent back. She was lifted all the way to heaven.

Good company is so powerful it can turn anyone's life around — even someone others looked down on.
The deeper layer

This one says: good company is so strong it can turn anyone's life around.

Sangat kaa gun bahut adhikaa-ee — "the goodness of the Sangat is very great." Sangat means good company, people who help you be your best.

Then the verse tells two old stories of unlikely people lifted up. The first is Ganika, a woman the world looked down on. She taught a parrot to say the Name, and she was saved. The second is Kubija, a woman with a bent back. Krishna was pleased and touched her, and she was lifted to heaven.

Neither one was someone others expected much from. Think of a kid everyone ignored, who joins a friendly team and starts to shine. Good company can reach anyone.

A Question to Sit With

How might one good friend help turn someone's whole life around?
