Chasing Shiny Things Is Churning Water for Butter

ਸਾਕਤ ਕਰਮ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਿਉ ਮਥੀਐ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਝੋਲ ਝੁਲਾਰੇ ॥
saakat karam paanee ji-o mathee-ai nit paanee jhol jhulaaray.
The actions of the faithless cynic are like the churning of water; he churns, constantly churning only water.

Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the supreme status is obtained; the butter is produced, and eaten with delight. ||2||

In plain words

Chasing only shiny things is like churning plain water — you never get butter.

But in good company, real richness comes, like butter from milk — sweet and nourishing.

Chasing only shiny things is like churning water for butter — good company brings the real, nourishing richness.
The deeper layer

A homely image: "the [faithless one]'s actions are like the churning of water — he churns and churns only water" (and water yields no butter). But "joining the Sat Sangat... the butter is produced, and eaten with delight." Chasing empty things is like churning water — endless effort, nothing to show; but good company churns real richness out of life, like butter from milk. For a child: chasing only shiny things is like churning water for butter — good company brings the real, nourishing richness.

A Question to Sit With

What effort in your life feels like 'churning water' — and what brings real richness?
