Being Led to Real Wisdom Is the Best Thing to Ask

kar kirpaa jaachik jan tayray ik maaga-o daan pi-aaray.
Bless me with Your Grace - I am just a humble beggar of Yours; I beg for a single blessing, O my Beloved.
satgur kee nit sarDhaa laagee mo ka-o har gur mayl savaaray. ||1||
I long constantly for the True Guru. Lead me to meet the Guru, O Lord, that I may be exalted and embellished. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

"I'm just a small one asking for one thing," my heart says; "lead me to what's wise."

I long for good, true wisdom — please bring me to it.

Of all the things you could ask for, being led to real wisdom is one of the best.
The deeper layer

The verse is a humble, single request: "I am just a beggar of Yours; I beg for a single blessing... lead me to meet the Guru." The one thing worth asking for above all is to be brought to wisdom. For a child: of all the things to ask for, being led to real wisdom is the best.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one good thing, what would it be?
