Everyone Came From the Same One; All Are One Family

naaree purakh purakh sabh naaree sabh ayko purakh muraaray.
Women and men, all the men and women, all came from the One Primal Lord God.
sant janaa kee rayn man bhaa-ee mil har jan har nistaaray. ||5||
My mind loves the dust of the feet of the humble; the Lord emancipates those who meet with the Lord's humble servants. ||5||

In plain words

Women and men — every single one of us — came from the same One.

My heart loves to be near humble, good people, and near them, hearts are set free.

Women and men, everyone, came from the same One — so we're all equal, all one family.
The deeper layer

A landmark equality verse: naaree purakh purakh sabh naaree—"women and men, all the men and women, all came from the One Primal Lord God." Every person, of every gender, comes from the same Source — so all are equal, all one family. This is a cornerstone Sikh teaching, striking for its time. For a child: women and men, everyone, came from the same One — so we're all equal, all one family.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone comes from the same source, what does that say about how to treat each other?
