I am such a great sinner; I am so unworthy. And yet the Guru, in His Mercy, has saved me. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Keep the boundless good in mind, O my mind.

Even feeling small and full of mistakes, I was saved by kindness.

Even feeling small and full of mistakes, kindness can save you anyway.
The deeper layer

This one says: even when you feel full of mistakes, kindness saves you anyway.

These lines are the rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mayray man bhaj thaakur agam apaaray — "O my mind, remember the Master who is beyond reach and without end."

Then: "I am such a great sinner, so unworthy, and yet the Guru, in His mercy, has saved me." Saying this is honest smallness, not hating yourself. The wonder is that grace saves anyway, however far short we feel. Think of a friend who forgives you before you even finish saying sorry.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to be helped and loved even when you feel you don't deserve it?
