After All the Books, Just Keep the Good in Mind

ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਸੋਧਿ ਸੋਧਿ ਦੇਖੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਨਾਰਦ ਬਚਨ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥
saastar bayd soDh soDh daykhay mun naarad bachan pukaaray.
I searched and searched through the Shaastras and the Vedas; Naarad the silent sage proclaimed these words as well.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
raam naam parhahu gat paavhu satsangat gur nistaaray. ||3||
Chanting the Lord's Name, salvation is attained; the Guru saves those in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||3||

In plain words

I searched the wise old books again and again. A great sage said the same thing:

Keep the good in mind, and stay in good company. That is what carries you home.

After all the searching in all the wise books, the answer is simple — keep the good in mind, in good company.
The deeper layer

This one says: after all the searching, the answer is simple. Keep the good in mind, in good company.

Saastar bayd soDh soDh daykhay — "I searched and searched the Shaastras and the Vedas." These are very old books of wisdom from India. Naarad, a sage from the old stories, said the same thing.

The answer: "remembering the Name, you are set free," and "the Guru saves those in the Sat Sangat," the company of good people. Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses, then finding them on your head. All that searching, and the answer was right there. Keep the good close, and stay near good people.

A Question to Sit With

What simple good thing is worth more than all the complicated searching?
