Even Feeling You've Fallen Short, You're Kept Safe

ਊਤਮ ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਰਖੇ ॥

The Exalted Lord of the World, the Master of the Universe, keeps a sinner like me in His Sanctuary

You are the Greatest Being, Lord, Destroyer of the pains of the meek; You have placed Your Name in my mouth, Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Even when I feel like I've fallen short, I'm kept safe in a kind shelter.

The gentle One eases the hurts of the small and puts good words in my mouth.

Even when you feel you've fallen short, you're kept safe in a kind shelter.
The deeper layer

This one says: even when you feel you have fallen short, you are kept safe.

The verse calls itself "a sinner like me." That is honest smallness, not hating yourself. It means, "I know I have fallen short." And the comfort is that such a person is still kept in saran, a safe shelter.

More than that, the One is called "Destroyer of the pains of the meek" — the One who takes away the hurts of the small. And "You have placed Your Name in my mouth": even the good words to say are given. Think of a kind coach who lets you stay on the team after a bad game, and then tells you what to say to cheer everyone up.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel you've messed up, what helps you feel safe and cared for again?
