Sikhism·Raag Nat Naaraayan·Shabad 5
Verse 3 of 5

Some Things Only Know Their Own Depth

tumree upmaa tum hee parabh jaanhu ham kahi na sakahi har gunay.
You alone know Your Praises, God; I cannot even describe Your Glorious Virtues, Lord.
jaisay tum taisay parabh tum hee gun jaanhu parabh apunay. ||2||
You are what You are, God; You alone know Your Glorious Virtues, God. ||2||

In plain words

Only You fully know how wonderful You are — it's more than anyone could describe.

You are simply, completely Yourself — and only You know Your own depth.

Some things are so wonderful that only they fully know their own depth — and that's part of the wonder.
The deeper layer

A verse of pure wonder and humility: "You alone know Your Praises... You are what You are, God." The One is beyond our describing — joti-o-jot, simply and wholly itself. This is a child-sized taste of mystery: some things are so deep that only they fully know themselves. For a child: some things are so wonderful that only they fully know their own depth — and that's part of the wonder.

A Question to Sit With

What's something so deep or wonderful you could never fully describe it?
