Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Perfect True Guru has given me the Naam.

I am blessed with joy and happiness, with freedom, and with a peace that lasts forever. All my tangled tasks have come out right.

Plant the right thing in good soil, and peace and joy grow from it on their own.
The deeper layer

The Naam brings joy, and life comes into order.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It is sung again and again like a chorus. It says satgur poorai naam dee-aa: the perfect Guru gave me the Naam.

Then good things pile up: anad mangal kali-aan sadaa sukh. That means bliss, joy, well-being and lasting peace. Guru Arjan loves this kind of overflowing list. Finally, kaaraj saglaa raas thee-aa: all my affairs came right. Think of a seed in good soil. Once it is planted, a whole garden grows. Once the Naam is planted, life comes into order.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could plant in your daily life that might grow into more calm?
