Look Inside Your Own Heart

ਦਖਨ ਦੇਸਿ ਹਰੀ ਕਾ ਬਾਸਾ ਪਛਿਮਿ ਅਲਹ ਮੁਕਾਮਾ ॥
dakhan days haree kaa baasaa pachhim alah mukaamaa.
The God of the Hindus lives in the southern lands, and the God of the Muslims lives in the west.
ਦਿਲ ਮਹਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਦਿਲੈ ਦਿਲਿ ਖੋਜਹੁ ਏਹੀ ਠਉਰ ਮੁਕਾਮਾ ॥੨॥
dil meh khoj dilai dil khojahu ayhee tha-ur mukaamaa. ||2||
So search in your heart - look deep into your heart of hearts; this is the home and the place where God lives. ||2||

In plain words

Hari lives in the lands of the south, people say, and Allah has his place in the west.

So search in your heart — look deep into your heart of hearts. This is the home, the place where the One lives.

You don't find the One by facing the right direction, but by looking inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

The One lives in your own heart of hearts, whichever way you face.

People locate the divine geographically — Hari in the south, Allah in the west — and Kabir gently turns the whole search around. Dil meh khoj, dilai dil khojahu: search in the heart, search the heart of the heart. The One is not reached by facing the right way but by turning attention back toward its own source. This is the same inward movement as suniai — becoming still enough that what was always here can finally be noticed.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most at home inside yourself?
