Hours of Praying That Never Land

ਕਲਿ ਭਗਵਤ ਬੰਦ ਚਿਰਾਂਮੰ ॥
kal bhagvat band chiraaNmaN.
You pray for hours to God the Beautiful.
ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਰਤਾ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਦੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karoor disat rataa nis baadaN. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But your gaze is evil, and your nights are wasted in conflict. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You pray for hours to the beautiful One.

But your eyes look at others with cruelty, and you spend your nights in quarrels.

Worship is measured by how you treat people after you pray.
The deeper layer

Prayer shows in how you treat people afterward.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. The whole shabad keeps coming back to it. Kal bhagvat band chiraaNmaN: you fold your hands and pray for hours to the beautiful One. Karoor disat rataa nis baadaN: but your gaze is hard and harsh, and your nights are spent in quarrels.

Beni tests worship by one thing: whether it changed how you see and treat people once you stand up. Think of saying a kind prayer at dinner, then snapping at your brother right after. The prayer only counts when it reaches the table too.

A Question to Sit With

Does the way you act toward others match the good things you say you believe?
