Commentary

Raag Raamkalee, Chaupada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

When the teaching pours peace into you, the inner music starts to play and you see kindness everywhere.

The Arc

  • Verse 1 (P0): given good work and the Name, all anxiety is set aside.
  • The Rahau (P1): the teaching resolves my affairs; the unstruck melody sounds within.
  • Verse 2 (P2): patience grows into joy; the bonds are cut.
  • Verse 3 (P3): lit up within, sorrow loses its hold, and the whole family is lifted.
  • Verse 4 (P4): no more inner split; wherever I look, the Merciful One.

Key Vocabulary

  • sayvak / sayv — the servant linked to service.
  • chintaa nivaaree — anxiety dissolved.
  • anhad tooray — the unstruck melody sounding within.
  • Dheer — patience, which grows into bliss.
  • sagal kutamb tari-aa — the whole family lifted along.
  • rasaal — the source of nectar.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The shabad links service to peace: given good work and the Name, worry falls away and the anhad naad, the unstruck melody, begins — freely, not through the yogi's forced concentration. Its most tender note is that one lit-up heart lifts a whole family; goodness spreads. It closes where so many of these shabads do: the Merciful seen everywhere.

For Raag Raamkalee

The inner sound-current the yogis pursue in deep trance is here a gift of the teaching, arriving with peace rather than through strain.

Translation Notes (Wellbeing)

  • "womb of reincarnation" (P2): dropped — rendered as freedom from the heart's restless circling, with no womb imagery for children.
