I see that some have already gone, O my Lord and Master; the burning fire is coming closer! ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

We come into this world with our ending already written, and we spend our days gathering the riches of life.

O my Master, I see that some have already gone ahead. The fire that ends every life is burning, and it is coming closer.

Knowing my time is precious makes today matter more.
The deeper layer

Every life has an ending, and knowing that helps us make each day count.

Maran likhaa-ay mandal meh aa-ay means we come into the world with our ending already written. Then we spend our days gathering a life together.

The verse notices that some people have already gone on ahead. It pictures bhaahi balantee, a fire that is coming closer. It is a strong way of saying our time here is short.

This is not meant to frighten us. It is meant to make each day matter. Think of the last week of summer vacation. Knowing it will end makes you enjoy every swim and every ice cream a little more.

A Question to Sit With

If you knew today mattered more than most days, what would you do a little differently?
