The Restless Soul

ਕਬਹੂ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਊਭਿ ਚੜਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥
kabhoo jee-arhaa oobh charhat hai kabhoo jaa-ay pa-i-aalay.
Sometimes, the soul soars high in the heavens, and sometimes it falls to the depths of the nether regions.
ਲੋਭੀ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
lobhee jee-arhaa thir na rahat hai chaaray kundaa bhaalay. ||2||
The greedy soul does not remain stable; it searches in the four directions. ||2||

In plain words

Some days my heart floats up as high as the sky; other days it sinks low and heavy.

When I let wanting run the show, I cannot sit still. I go looking in every direction for something to fill me.

A heart run by wanting cannot hold still.
The deeper layer

Our hearts go up and down, and wanting more is what keeps them from sitting still.

Jee-arhaa is a tender little word for the soul, like saying "my little heart." Guru Nanak watches it swing oobh, high up to the sky, and then down to pa-i-aalay, the deepest places.

He names the reason plainly. The heart is lobhee, which means it keeps wanting more. So it searches chaaray kundaa, in all four directions. It is like hunting all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head. What we are looking for outside can only settle us from the inside.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you keep chasing that never quite fills you up?
