ਜਹ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥

The Guru, the True Guru, has expelled my doubts.

Says Nanak, I have merged into the Word of the Shabad. ||4||10||

In plain words

When the puffed-up sense of "me" is gone, fear turns and runs.

That servant holds on to the Guru's feet. The Guru, the True Guru, has cleared away my doubts.

Nanak says: I have blended right into the Word.

When the ego steps aside, fear has nothing left to protect.
The deeper layer

When the puffed-up self steps aside, fear has nowhere to stand.

Jah aap ga-i-aa bha-o bhaagaa — where the self goes, fear runs away. Aap is the puffed-up "me." Much of our fear is there to guard that "me." Will I look silly? Will I lose? When the "me" steps back, fear loses its job. Think of a bodyguard with no one left to protect. He can just go home.

The satgur, the True Guru, clears away bharam, doubt and confusion. Then Nanak says he has merged into the sabad, the Word, like a drop of water joining the sea.

A Question to Sit With

What are you less afraid of when you stop worrying about yourself?
