Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 10
Verse 4 of 5

Gurbani Is the True Music

ਸਭਿ ਨਾਦ ਬੇਦ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥
sabh naad bayd gurbaanee.
Gurbani is the sound current of the Naad, the Vedas, everything.
ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਿਗਪਾਣੀ ॥
man raataa saarigpaanee.
My mind is attuned to the Lord of the Universe.
ਤਹ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਤਪ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
tah tirath varat tap saaray.
He is my sacred shrine of pilgrimage, fasting and austere self-discipline.
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
gur mili-aa har nistaaray. ||3||
The Lord saves, and carries across, those who meet with the Guru. ||3||

In plain words

The Guru's words are all the sacred sound and all the holy books rolled into one.

My mind is tuned to the One, the Lord of all. The One is my pilgrimage, my fast and my discipline. Whoever meets the Guru, the One carries safely across.

For a heart tuned to the One, the teaching holds every sacred thing at once.
The deeper layer

For a mind tuned to the One, the Guru's words hold every sacred thing at once.

Sabh naad bayd gurbaanee — the Guru's Word is all the sacred sound and all the holy books. Naad is the sacred inner sound the yogis listened for. Bayd are the Vedas, the ancient Hindu scriptures. Gurbaanee is the Guru's own words. Guru Nanak gathers them all into the living teaching.

Tah tirath varat tap saaray — there are all the pilgrimages, fasts and hard disciplines. A tirath is a sacred place people travel to. The verse says a mind raataa, dyed in the One like cloth in color, already holds them all.

Think of a playlist that already has every song you love. You do not need to hunt for each one. The outer journey has turned inward.

A Question to Sit With

What is one place or practice that makes you feel connected to something larger?
