The Unstruck Melody

ਧੁਨਿ ਵਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਘੋਰਾ ॥
Dhun vaajay anhad ghoraa.
The unstruck melody of the sound current resonates and resounds;
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮੋਰਾ ॥
man maani-aa har ras moraa.
my mind is appeased by the subtle essence of the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai sach samaa-i-aa.
Through the Perfect Guru, I am absorbed in Truth.
ਗੁਰੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
gur aad purakh har paa-i-aa. ||2||
Through the Guru, I have found the Lord, the Primal Being. ||2||

In plain words

Deep inside, a music begins to play that no instrument makes, a sound with no drum and no string, simply there.

My mind grows calm and content, tasting the sweetness of the One. Through the Perfect Guru I settle into Truth. Through the Guru I have found the One, the very first Being of all.

There is a music inside a peaceful heart that no instrument plays.
The deeper layer

Deep inside a peaceful heart, there is a kind of music no instrument plays.

Dhun vaajay anhad ghoraa — the unstruck sound rings out. Anhad means "unstruck," a sound that no hand or drum makes. Yogis, people who practice deep meditation, prized this inner sound. Guru Nanak keeps its beauty. But he places it in a heart at rest.

Man maani-aa har ras moraa — my mind is content, tasting the sweetness of the One. It is like the soft hum of a quiet house at night. You notice it only when everything else goes still.

Through the gur poorai, the perfect Guru, the mind settles into sach, Truth. There it finds the aad purakh, the very first Being, the One who was there before everything.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt a deep quiet that was almost like a sound?
