raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਪੇਖੀਅਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਗਲ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਧਾਰਨਾ ॥੧॥
jee-a jant sabh paykhee-ah parabh sagal tumaaree Dhaarnaa. ||1||
All beings and creatures that are seen, God, depend on Your Support. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Every living thing you can see, God, rests on You.

Not one creature stands on its own — all of it is held up by You.

Nothing holds itself up — everything is being held.
The deeper layer

Every living thing is held up by the One.

Jee-a jant sabh paykhee-ah means all the living beings we can see. Sagal tumaaree Dhaarnaa means all of them rest on Your Dhaarnaa, Your support that holds them up.

Nothing holds itself up by itself. Think of a tree. The branches, the leaves and the birds' nests all hang on the trunk, and the trunk stands on its roots. The One is like the roots and the ground under everything.

This song is an Ashtapadee, a longer song, and each verse here is one long line. This first line sets the ground for all the rest.

A Question to Sit With

What is holding you up that you rarely stop to notice?
