Eyes Open, I See Only Wonder

ਸਭਿ ਥਾਨ ਦੇਖੇ ਨੈਣ ਅਲੋਇ ॥

Nanak sees the wondrous Lord everywhere. ||8||4||

In plain words

I have looked all around me with wide-open eyes.

There is no one other than the One.

By the Guru's grace, doubt and fear have lifted.

Nanak says: everywhere I look, I see the wondrous One.

Look with open eyes and grace, and everywhere becomes wonder.
The deeper layer

With open eyes and the Guru's grace, everywhere becomes wonder.

Sabh thaan daykhay nain alo-ay — I have looked everywhere with wide-open eyes. Nain means eyes.

Tis bin doojaa avar na ko-ay — there is no one else but the One. Wherever I look, the One is there.

Bharam bhai chhootay gur parsaad — doubt and fear have gone, by the Guru's grace. Parsaad means a gift given in kindness.

Naanak paykhi-o sabh bismaad — Nanak sees wonder everywhere. Bismaad is the awe you feel when something is so amazing it takes your words away.

Think of seeing the ocean for the first time, or a sky full of stars far from city lights. You just stand there and say, "Wow." The song closes with that "wow," but now it is everywhere you look.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you looked at your ordinary day with wide-open eyes?
