Verse 8 of 9

Your Kindness Started This Love

ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
tumree kirpaa tay laagee pareet.
By Your Grace, we love You.
ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਤਾ ਆਏ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
da-i-aal bha-ay taa aa-ay cheet.
When You show Mercy, then You come into our minds.
ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਧਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥
da-i-aa Dhaaree tin Dhaaranhaar.
When the Support of the earth granted His Grace,
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਛੁਟਕਾਰ ॥੭॥
banDhan tay ho-ee chhutkaar. ||7||
then I was released from my bonds. ||7||

In plain words

It is Your kindness that first stirred this love in me.

When mercy comes, You settle into my thoughts.

And when the One who holds up the whole earth showed grace, the ropes that tied me simply fell away.

Even your love for the One begins as a gift from the One.
The deeper layer

Even our love for the One is a gift from the One.

Tumree kirpaa tay laagee preet — it is by Your kirpaa, Your grace, that this love began. We think we start loving the One. The verse says the One started it.

Da-i-aal bha-ay taa aa-ay cheet — when You are kind, You come into our thoughts. Cheet means mind or thought. So even remembering is a gift.

Da-i-aa Dhaaree tin Dhaaranhaar — then the Dhaaranhaar, the One who holds up the whole earth, showed kindness. BanDhan tay ho-ee chhutkaar — and I was set free from what tied me. BanDhan means bonds, like ropes.

Think of a baby smiling at a parent. The baby did not invent that love. The parent's love came first, and the baby's smile answered it. Love and freedom are received, not earned.

A Question to Sit With

Has love ever surprised you by rising on its own?
