Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 101
Verse 16 of 22

Held by the Hem of Your Robe

ਅਪਣੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲੇ ਆਪਿ ਲੀਏ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
apnay jee-a tai aap samHaalay aap lee-ay larh laa-ee. ||15||
You Yourself take care of Your beings; You Yourself attach them to the hem of Your robe. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You care for every living being Yourself.

You Yourself hold us to the hem of Your robe, close, the way a small child holds tight to a parent's sleeve.

You are held close before you even think to ask.
The deeper layer

Apnay jee-a tai aap samhaalay — You Yourself look after Your own beings. Larh laa-ee, attaching to the hem of the robe, is Gurbani's image of being kept close and safe; the child-and-parent-sleeve picture carries the same tenderness. The care comes first; we are held before we ask.

A Question to Sit With

Who holds onto you, and who do you hold onto?
