putar kaltar mahaa bikhi-aa meh gur saachai laa-ay taraa-ee. ||14||
In the midst of children and spouse, and utter corruption, the True Guru has carried me across. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am in the middle of family life. My children and my partner are here, and so are the strong pulls that lead me wrong.

Right here, the True Guru has carried me across.

You do not have to leave ordinary life to be carried across it.
The deeper layer

You do not have to run away from ordinary life to find the One.

Putar kaltar means children and spouse. It stands for all of family life, with its busy days and people we love. Mahaa bikhi-aa means the strong pulls that come with it: wanting, worrying, holding on too tight.

Some people thought you had to leave home to be spiritual. They went off to forests or mountains. This verse says something else.

Gur saachai laa-ay taraa-ee — the True Guru carried me across. And where did the crossing happen? Right in the middle of it all.

Family is not the problem. Think of learning to swim. You do not learn on the dry sand. You learn in the water, with a good teacher holding you up. The Guru helps us right where we are.

A Question to Sit With

How can you stay steady right in the middle of a busy, full life?
