The Song of Joy at Home

manglaa har manglaa mayray parabh kai sunee-ai manglaa.
The song of joy, the Lord's song of joy; listen to the song of joy of my God.
sohilrhaa parabh sohilrhaa anhad Dhunee-ai sohilrhaa.
The wedding song, God's wedding song; the unstruck sound current of His wedding song resounds.
anhad vaajay sabad agaajay nit nit jisahi vaDhaa-ee.
The unstruck sound current vibrates, and the Word of the Shabad resounds; there is continuous, continual rejoicing.
so parabh Dhi-aa-ee-ai sabh kichh paa-ee-ai marai na aavai jaa-ee.
Meditating on that God, everything is obtained; He does not die, or come or go.
chookee pi-aasaa pooran aasaa gurmukh mil nirgunee-ai.
Thirst is quenched, and hopes are fulfilled; the Gurmukh meets with the absolute, unmanifest Lord.
kaho naanak ghar parabh mayray kai nit nit mangal sunee-ai. ||4||1||
Says Nanak, in the Home of my God, the songs of joy are continuously, continually heard. ||4||1||

In plain words

A song of joy, the One's song of joy — listen for the joy in my One.

A wedding song, the One's wedding song, ringing with music that has no beginning and no end.

That music sounds, the Shabad rings out, and every single day there is fresh celebration.

Hold that One in mind and everything is found — the One who never dies, never comes or goes.

Thirst is quenched, hopes are filled, and the Guru's follower meets the One who is beyond all form.

Nanak says: in the home of my One, songs of joy are heard, day after day after day.

In the home of the One, songs of joy are heard every single day.
The deeper layer

Wedding imagery, central to the Chhant form, closes the hymn: the soul's union with the One is a marriage, celebrated with sohilaa (the wedding song). Anhad is the unstruck music of that joy. The One is nirgun, beyond all qualities and form. Crucially, the "home" (ghar) where the songs are heard is within: the celebration is not a distant event but a present, daily reality for the awakened heart.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small joy you could notice again and again, day after day?
