Let Your Food Be the Name

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ॥

Look upon pain and pleasure as one and the same, sorrow and separation.

Let your food be contemplative meditation upon the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

asthir kanDh japai nirankaaree. ||3||
Your wall shall be permanent, by meditating on the Formless Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Think deeply on the Guru's Word, yogi.

Hold pain and joy, sorrow and separation, with the same calm.

Let your food be the Naam, and thinking on the Guru's Word. Keep the Formless One in mind, and your wall will stand firm forever.

Let the Name be your feast, and your inner house cannot be shaken.
The deeper layer

The best food for a yogi is the Name.

The verse speaks to a jogee, a yogi. First: gur kaa sabad veechaar — think deeply about the Guru's Word. Turn it over in your heart.

Then: dukh sukh sam karnaa — hold hard days and good days with the same calm. Dukh is pain. Sukh is joy. Think of a tree in the seasons. Sun or storm, its roots stay put.

Yogis often shared a special meal called bhugat. Here the verse gives a new menu. Bhugat naam — let the Name be your food. That is the meal that truly feeds you.

Last: asthir kanDh — a wall that stands firm. When you keep the nirankaaree, the Formless One, in mind, the house of your life is built on rock, not sand.

A Question to Sit With

What keeps you steady whether your day is good or hard?
