Verse 3 of 5

The Wagon of the Body

ਪੰਚ ਬੈਲ ਗਡੀਆ ਦੇਹ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
panch bail gadee-aa dayh Dhaaree.
The five bulls, the senses, pull the wagon of the body around.
ਰਾਮ ਕਲਾ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ॥
raam kalaa nibhai pat saaree.
By the Lord's power, one's honor is preserved.
ਧਰ ਤੂਟੀ ਗਾਡੋ ਸਿਰ ਭਾਰਿ ॥
Dhar tootee gaado sir bhaar.
But when the axle breaks, the wagon falls and crashes.
ਲਕਰੀ ਬਿਖਰਿ ਜਰੀ ਮੰਝ ਭਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
lakree bikhar jaree manjh bhaar. ||2||
It falls apart, like a pile of logs. ||2||

In plain words

Picture your body as a wagon pulled along by five bulls, your five senses.

By the One's power, your honor is kept safe.

But when the axle breaks, the wagon tips and falls, and comes apart like a pile of loose logs.

The body is a wagon that carries you for a while; the One's power keeps your honor.
The deeper layer

Your body is like a wagon that carries you for a while.

Panch bail gadee-aa dayh Dhaaree — five bulls pull the wagon of the body. The five bulls are the five senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. They pull us along through life, this way and that.

What keeps the wagon going? Raam kalaa — the One's power. It is what holds everything together and keeps us whole.

The verse also reminds us that the wagon does not last forever. One day the axle gives way and the wagon stops. That is a picture of the body's journey coming to an end.

This is not meant to scare anyone. It is like knowing your favorite shoes will wear out one day. You still enjoy them. You just do not put your whole trust in them.

So the verse points our trust to the right place. Not to the wagon, but to the One whose power carries it.

A Question to Sit With

What is worth trusting even more than the things that can wear out?
