In plain words

Without serving the Guru, peace does not come. It cannot be found anywhere else.

No matter how much you long for it, without good karma it cannot be found.

Those filled inside with greed and wrongdoing are ruined by loving something other than the One.

Their coming and going in birth and death does not end. Caught in ego, they suffer.

Those who set their heart on the Guru are never left empty.

Death does not call them to account, and they do not suffer.

Nanak says: those who follow the Guru are saved, and they merge into the True Word.

Peace comes through serving the Guru, and nowhere else.
The deeper layer

Peace comes only through serving the True Guru, and longing by itself cannot produce it; good karma here is the opening of the hand, not a purchase. Death's summons does not reach those whose hearts are set on the Guru. Rescue comes at the close: the Gurmukh comes through whole, merging in the true Shabad.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever wanted calm so badly that the wanting itself got in the way?
