In plain words

Night is the summer and day is the winter; desire and anger are the two fields that get planted.

Greed gets the soil ready, and falsehood is the seed; attachment and clinging love are the farmer and the hired hand.

Thinking those thoughts is the plow, and wrongdoing is the harvest; that is what you earn and eat, in the flow of the One's order.

Nanak says: when you are asked for your account, that field will be barren.

You end up eating exactly what you plant, so watch what you sow.
The deeper layer

Every part of this farm is a vice: desire and anger the fields, greed the soil, falsehood the seed, attachment the farmer, so that you eat exactly what you sow, all within Hukam, the flow of existence. A field farmed like that is barren when the account is asked for.

This First Mehl shalok is the dark half of a matched pair of farming pictures; its bright twin follows immediately.

A Question to Sit With

What are you planting in yourself, day by day?
