Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Make loving awe of the One your farm, purity your water, and truth and contentment your cows and oxen.
Make humility the plow, your awareness the farmer, remembrance the work of readying the soil, and union with the One the planting time.
Let the Naam be the seed and the One's forgiving grace the harvest. Farm like this, and the whole world's show will seem false.
Nanak says: if the One looks on you with mercy, all your separation will end.
Every farm tool is now a virtue: loving awe the field, purity the water, truth and contentment the oxen, humility the plow, awareness the plowman, remembrance the readying of the soil, union with the One the planting time. The Naam is the seed and grace the harvest, and one merciful glance ends the ache of separation.
This First Mehl shalok is the bright companion to the verse before it, and a landmark of the Vaar. Vice-farm and virtue-farm together make one complete teaching.
If your good habits were a farm, what would you plant first?
