Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Someone turned away from the One is caught in the dark of clinging attachment, and speaks from the pull of wanting other things.
Loving other things than the One always brings pain; it is like churning water, on and on.
Someone turned toward the Guru meditates on the Naam, churns, and draws out the essence, the way butter comes from cream.
A light shines deep in their heart; they seek the One and find the One.
The One also leaves people wandering in doubt; no one can say anything about it.
Wasted effort and fruitful effort can look the same from outside. The mind lost in duality churns water endlessly and gets nothing, while the person turned toward the Guru churns and draws out the essence, like butter from cream. The heart is lit within, and the One who was sought is found. And the One also leaves some wandering in doubt, a mystery no one can explain.
Butter-churning is a picture that returns again and again across Gurbani.
Where are you putting in effort that is not yielding anything, and what might change it?
