Caught by Grace Instead

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

First Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਝੀਵਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
naanak ih jee-o machhulee jheevar tarisnaa kaal.
O Nanak, this soul is the fish, and death is the hungry fisherman.
ਮਨੂਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਪੜੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥

The blind man does not even think of this. And suddenly, the net is cast.
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
naanak chit achayt hai chintaa baDhaa jaa-ay.
O Nanak, his consciousness is unconscious, and he departs, bound by anxiety.

But if the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites the soul with Himself. ||2||

In plain words

Nanak says: this soul is a fish, and death is a hungry fisherman.

Someone who does not see never even thinks of it, and suddenly the net is cast.

Nanak says: their mind stays asleep, and they leave this life tied up in worry.

But if the One looks on them with grace, the One joins them to the One's own self.

Life is short and precious; stay awake to it, and grace can join you to the One.
The deeper layer

The soul is a fish and death the fisherman, and it is easy to drift through life without thinking of it. Life is short and precious, and this is a gentle wake-up call not to sleep through it. Grace has the last word: when the One looks with grace, the soul is joined to the One.

Every life comes to an end, and that is a natural part of being alive. Thinking about it is meant to make the days you have feel more precious, not more frightening.

A Question to Sit With

What would you pay more attention to if you remembered how precious your time is?
