My mother-in-law is my enemy, O Nanak; my father-in-law is argumentative and my brother-in-law burns me at every step.
habhay bhas punayday vatan jaa mai sajan toohai. ||2||
They can all just play in the dust, when You are my Friend, O Lord. ||2||

In plain words

Nanak says: my mother-in-law is set against me, my father-in-law quarrels, and my husband's elder brother scorches me at every step.

Let them all play in the dust, when You are my Friend.

The worries that seem to close in from all sides lose their grip when the One is your Friend.
The deeper layer

The soul is pictured as a young bride in a hard household, and the in-laws stand for the pulls of the world (Maya): craving, doubt and worldly pressure that hem the soul in. They are not real relatives to blame. When the One is the Friend, these pulls lose their power and are left playing in the dust.

A Question to Sit With

What worries feel smaller when you are with someone who makes you feel safe?
