salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ustat nindaa naanak jee mai habh vanjaa-ee chhorhi-aa habh kijh ti-aagee.
I have totally discarded praise and slander, O Nanak; I have forsaken and abandoned everything.
habhay saak koorhaavay dithay ta-o palai taidai laagee. ||1||
I have seen that all relationships are false, and so I have grasped hold of the hem of Your robe, Lord. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nanak says: I have let go of praise and blame completely. I have given everything up and set it aside.
I have seen that every worldly tie is false, so I have taken hold of the hem of Your robe.
You are free the day you stop living for applause and stop fearing blame.
Sahaj is the calm that stays steady through praise and blame. Calling worldly ties false is not contempt for people; it means no longer being ruled by what others think, and no longer leaning on ties that cannot hold. Holding the hem of the robe (palai) is a picture of taking refuge in the One who lasts.
A Question to Sit With
