salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
jaaN pir andar taaN Dhan baahar.
When the Husband Lord is within the heart, then Maya, the bride, goes outside.
jaaN pir baahar taaN Dhan maahar.
When one's Husband Lord is outside of oneself, then Maya, the bride, is supreme.
bin naavai baho fayr firaahar.
Without the Name, one wanders all around.
satgur sang dikhaa-i-aa jaahar.
The True Guru shows us that the Lord is with us.
jan naanak sachay sach samaahar. ||1||
Servant Nanak merges in the Truest of the True. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When the Beloved is inside the heart, Maya, the pull of passing things, goes outside.
When the Beloved is outside, Maya takes charge.
Without the Naam, you wander round and round.
The True Guru shows plainly that the One is right here with us.
Nanak says: I, Your servant, merge into the Truest of the True.
Whatever fills your heart is what ends up running your life.
Whatever fills the heart is what runs your life: inside (andar) and outside (baahar) trade places. Maya is not an evil force here; it is whatever crowds the One out of the heart. The True Guru makes plain that the One was with us the whole time.
