mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
Making all sorts of efforts, they wander around; but they do not make even one effort.
naanak jit aahar jag uDhrai virlaa boojhai ko-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, how rare are those who understand the effort which saves the world. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People go around making every kind of effort, but they do not make the one effort that counts.

Nanak says: rare is the one who understands the effort that carries the world across.

Being busy is not the same as spending your energy on what matters most.
The deeper layer

People make every kind of effort (aahar) except the one that counts. Being busy is not the same as the work of remembrance and love. Rare is the one who understands which single effort carries the world across.

A Question to Sit With

What is one effort that matters more than all your busywork?
