The Ground That Holds Everyone

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਬੀਰ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਤਸਕਰ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
kabeer Dhartee saaDh kee taskar baiseh gaahi.
Kabir, the earth belongs to the Holy, but the thieves have come and now sit among them.
ਧਰਤੀ ਭਾਰਿ ਨ ਬਿਆਪਈ ਉਨ ਕਉ ਲਾਹੂ ਲਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
Dhartee bhaar na bi-aapa-ee un ka-o laahoo laahi. ||1||
The earth does not feel their weight; even they profit. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kabir says: the earth belongs to the holy people, yet thieves have come and sit among them.

The earth does not feel their weight; even they gain from it.

Goodness holds up even the people who did not earn it.
The deeper layer

The earth that holds everyone is a picture of nirvair, a heart without hate: the goodness of holy people benefits even those who came with bad intent, without complaint and without gloating. Being near goodness quietly helps: even they gain.

Like the shalok before it in Kabir's voice, these are Guru Arjan's words, offered in tribute to the Bhagat.

A Question to Sit With

Has being around good people ever quietly made you a better person?
