Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
Blessed, blessed is Guru Ram Das! The One who made you has also raised you high.
Your wonder is complete: the Creator placed you on the throne.
The Sikhs and the Sangat bow to you, seeing in you the Highest One.
You never change. No one can measure you or find your end.
Those who serve you with love, you carry across.
Greed, envy, wanting, anger and clinging: you have beaten them and driven them all out.
Blessed is your place, and true is your glory.
You are Guru Nanak, you are Angad, you are Amar Das. That is how I know you.
When I saw the Guru, my mind found comfort.
The same light can shine through many people; what matters is that it shines.
The deeper layer
Now the light shines through Guru Ram Das, the fourth: you are Nanak, you are Angad, you are Amar Das (tu nanak tu lahna tu gur amar). One light, many bodies.
The Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One, bows to him. The five inner troubles (greed, envy, wanting, anger, clinging) are driven out. The closing line, seeing the Guru, the mind was comforted (gur dithaa taa man saadhaari-aa), is the ballad's tenderest note.
A Question to Sit With
Is there a person whose presence alone makes you feel calmer?
