How can I praise You, O True Supreme King, when You are so wise and all-knowing?
ਦਾਨੁ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਸੋ ਸਤੇ ਦਾਣੁ ॥
daan je satgur bhaavsee so satay daan.
Those blessings granted by the Pleasure of the True Guru - please bless Satta with those gifts.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੰਦਾ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਉਮਤਿ ਹੈਰਾਣੁ ॥
naanak handaa chhatar sir umat hairaan.
Seeing Nanak's canopy waving over Your head, everyone was astonished.
ਸੋ ਟਿਕਾ ਸੋ ਬੈਹਣਾ ਸੋਈ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
so tikaa so baihnaa so-ee deebaan.
The same mark on the forehead, the same throne, and the same Royal Court.
ਪਿਯੂ ਦਾਦੇ ਜੇਵਿਹਾ ਪੋਤ੍ਰਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੬॥
piyoo daaday jayvihaa potraa parvaan. ||6||
Just like the father and grandfather, the son is approved. ||6||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
The same mark on the forehead, the same throne, the same royal court.
Like his father and grandfather before him, the grandson is accepted.
With the strength of love he used the great serpent as a rope,
and the Sumayr mountain as a stick, to churn the ocean of the world.
He brought up the fourteen jewels and let the light of the One shine out.
He made calm knowing his horse, and self-control his saddle.
He set the arrow of the One's praise on the bow of Truth.
In this dark age there was only pitch darkness, and then he rose like the sun.
He farms the field of Truth and spreads the shelter of Truth over all.
Your kitchen always has ghee and flour for everyone to eat.
You understand the four corners of the world. In your mind, the Shabad is held highest.
You end the coming and going of births, and give the mark of Your loving glance.
You came into the world as the form of the all-knowing First One.
No storm or wind can shake you. You stand like the Sumayr mountain.
You know what is inside every heart. You are the Knower of all who know.
How can I praise You, O True King, when You are so wise and all-knowing?
Satta asks: please give me the gifts the True Guru is happy to give.
Seeing Guru Nanak's canopy waving over your head, everyone is amazed.
The same mark on the forehead, the same throne, the same royal court.
Like his father and grandfather before him, the grandson is accepted.
A steady heart is like a mountain: storms come and go, but it does not move.
The deeper layer
Guru Amar Das, the third in the line, is honored here: piyoo daade jevihaa potaa parvaan, like father and grandfather, the grandson is accepted. Virtues become his gear: calm as a horse, self-control as a saddle, praise as an arrow on the bow of Truth. He rises like the sun when the age is dark, and stands unshaken as Sumayr, the great mountain.
The bards call him the Knower of hearts and an avataar, the form of the Primal One come into the world: their way of saying that the same divine light shines in him.
A Question to Sit With
