When Truth Stood on All Four Feet

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, everyone spoke the Truth.

In each and every home, devotional worship was performed by the people, according to the Guru's Teachings.

In that Golden Age, Dharma had four feet.

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

In the first age, the Golden Age, everyone spoke the truth.

In every home, people worshipped with love, following the Guru's teaching.

In that age, goodness stood on four feet, steady as a table on all four legs.

Rare are those who turn to the Guru, think it over, and understand.

Goodness stands firm when it rests on the truth — like a table on all four legs.
The deeper layer

Long ago, people pictured four ages of the world (yugas) — Sat, Traytaa, Dwaapur, Kali — each said to hold a little less goodness than the last, with dharam (right living, goodness) standing on four feet in the first age and losing a foot each age after. Guru Amar Das borrows this familiar picture only to bend it: the Name is great in every age. No one is doomed by being born “late.”

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stand steady when things get hard?
