The One Thing Great in Every Age

ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਈ ॥
jug chaaray naam vadi-aa-ee ho-ee.
In all four ages, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is glory and greatness.
je naam laagai so mukat hovai gur bin naam na paavai ko-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One who holds tight to the Naam is liberated; without the Guru, no one obtains the Naam. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In all four ages, the Naam, keeping the One in mind, is the glory and the greatness.

Whoever holds tight to the Naam is set free. Without the Guru, no one receives the Naam.

In every age, the greatest treasure is the same: keeping the One in mind.
The deeper layer

In every age, the Naam is the true greatness, and it comes through the Guru. Vadi-aa-ee means glory or greatness; mukat means freedom, liberation. Most good things are handed on by someone who already knows the way, and the Naam reaches us through the Guru in the same way.

This is the rahau, the refrain the whole shabad circles back to.

A Question to Sit With

What is something worth holding onto, no matter what year it is?
