Letting Go of What Is Not Mine

ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਤੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਅਪਬਾਦੁ ਨ ਛੂਟੈ ॥
par Dhan par tan par tee nindaa par apbaad na chhootai.
Others' wealth, others' bodies, others' wives, others' slander and others' fights - I have not given them up.
ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਹੋਤੁ ਹੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਪਰਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥੨॥
aavaa gavan hot hai fun fun ih parsang na tootai. ||2||
For the sake of these, coming and going in reincarnation happens over and over again, and this story never ends. ||2||

In plain words

I have not let go of reaching for what belongs to others, their money and the people in their lives, or of talking badly about others and picking fights.

Because of these, I keep coming and going, born again and again, and the story never ends.

Chasing what is not yours just keeps you spinning in the same circle.
The deeper layer

Some habits keep pulling you back into the same circle.

He lists them plainly: wanting other people's money, wanting what is not his to want, speaking ill of others, and quarreling. It is an honest list, not a shaming.

Aavaa gavan means coming and going, being born again and again. Kabir says these habits keep that circle turning. It is like a merry-go-round that keeps spinning as long as you stay on. The good news is that you can choose to step off.

A Question to Sit With

What is a habit that keeps pulling you back around to the same trouble?
