In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Maya, the trapper, has sprung her trap.

But the Guru, who is free, has put out the fire.

When I came to know this mind, from my toes to the top of my head,

I took my cleansing bath deep inside myself.

The cleansing that matters most happens inside.
The deeper layer

The bath that matters most happens inside.

The trapper here is Maya, the pull of shiny, passing things that makes us forget what matters. Maya has set her trap. But the Guru, who is free, has put out the fire of restlessness.

Then Kabir looked closely at his own mind, from the tips of his toes to the top of his head. Tab antar majan keenaa — then I bathed deep inside.

This shabad uses words from yoga, the practice of training the body and breath. Many people bathe in holy rivers. The bath Kabir means is the one that happens within. It is like tidying your room before a friend visits, only this room is your own heart.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to feel clean on the inside?
