In plain words

The Speaker has spoken and let the Shabad, the Word, be heard.

The listener has heard it and kept it in the mind.

Turning to the Creator, you cross over.

Kabir says: this is the essence.

Words of truth, heard and taken to heart, carry you across.
The deeper layer

Speak the Word, listen deeply, take it to heart, and cross over.

Baktai bak sabad sunaa-i-aa — the speaker spoke the Word. The Shabad is the Guru's Word. Suntai sun man basaa-i-aa — the listener heard it and kept it in the mind. Japji Sahib calls this deep listening suniai, and taking it to heart mannai.

Turning to the Maker, a person crosses over, like a boat carrying you across a wide river. Kabir says this is the essence, the heart of it all. It is truth spoken with love, and taken in.

Think of a piece of advice a friend once gave you that you still carry years later.

A Question to Sit With

What is a piece of wisdom someone spoke that you took to heart?
