Verse 4 of 5

When the Inner Music Begins

ਚੂਕੀਅਲੇ ਮੋਹ ਮਇਆਸਾ ॥
chookee-alay moh ma-i-aasaa.
My attachment to Maya has been eradicated;
ਸਸਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੂਰ ਗਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
sas keeno soor giraasaa.
the moon energy has devoured the sun energy.
ਜਬ ਕੁੰਭਕੁ ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਲੀਣਾ ॥
jab kumbhak bharipur leenaa.
When I was focused and merged into the all-pervading Lord,
ਤਹ ਬਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਬੀਣਾ ॥੩॥
tah baajay anhad beenaa. ||3||
then the unstruck sound current began to vibrate. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My clinging to Maya, the pull of passing things, is gone.

The cool moon has swallowed the hot sun: calm has taken in the restless heat.

When I was fully focused and merged into the One who is everywhere,

the unstruck music began to play.

When restlessness is soothed, a quiet joy you could not hear before starts to sound.
The deeper layer

When restlessness cools down, a quiet inner music begins.

Chookee-alay moh ma-i-aasaa — my clinging to Maya, the pull of passing things, is gone. Then comes a picture from yoga. Sas keeno soor giraasaa — the moon swallowed the sun. In yoga, the moon stands for coolness and the sun for heat. So a cool calm swallowed up the restless heat inside.

When Kabir melted into the One who is everywhere, the anhad beenaa began to play. Anhad means unstruck. It is music that no one plays on any instrument. It is the sound of a heart that has come to rest. Think of a house gone quiet at night, when you can hear your own calm breathing.

A Question to Sit With

What quiets the restless heat in you?
