Verse 4 of 10

Where Wisdom Wells Up

ਉਪਜੈ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
upjai gi-aan durmat chheejai.
Spiritual wisdom wells up, and evil-mindedness departs;
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
amrit ras gagnantar bheejai.
the nucleus of the mind sky is drenched with Ambrosial Nectar.
ਏਸੁ ਕਲਾ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਉ ॥
ays kalaa jo jaanai bhay-o.
One who knows the secret of this device,
ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾਸੁ ਪਰਮ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ॥੩॥
bhaytai taas param gurday-o. ||3||
meets the Supreme Divine Guru. ||3||

In plain words

Wisdom wells up, and unkind thinking drains away.

The high, open sky of the mind is soaked in sweet nectar, like dry ground after a warm rain.

Whoever knows the secret of this skill meets the highest Guru, the Guru who is divine.

Wisdom rises, unkindness drains away, and the mind fills with sweetness.
The deeper layer

When wisdom grows inside you, unkind thinking fades away.

Upjai gi-aan durmat chheejai — wisdom wells up, and bad thinking wears away. Gi-aan is wisdom. Durmat is a twisted, unkind way of thinking.

The gagan is the open sky inside your mind. The verse says it gets soaked in amrit, sweet nectar, like dry ground after warm rain. Whoever learns this kalaa, this inner skill, meets the highest Guru. Like riding a bike, it is something you come to know by doing.

A Question to Sit With

When has getting quiet helped a bad mood pass?
