Verse 3 of 10

How You Know You Have Arrived

ਦੇਵ ਸਥਾਨੈ ਕਿਆ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ॥
dayv sathaanai ki-aa neesaanee.
What is the insignia of the Divine Lord's dwelling?
ਤਹ ਬਾਜੇ ਸਬਦ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
tah baajay sabad anaahad banee.
The unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates there.
ਤਹ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਪਉਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
tah chand na sooraj pa-un na paanee.
There is no moon or sun, no air or water there.
ਸਾਖੀ ਜਾਗੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
saakhee jaagee gurmukh jaanee. ||2||
The Gurmukh becomes aware, and knows the Teachings. ||2||

In plain words

What is the sign of the One's home?

There the Shabad plays, a music no one is playing.

There is no moon or sun there, no wind or water.

The Gurmukh, the one who turns toward the Guru, wakes up and knows the teaching.

You know you have arrived inside when a quiet music begins.
The deeper layer

There is a sign that you have reached the One's inner home.

Dayv sathaanai ki-aa neesaanee — what is the sign of the One's dwelling? The sign is the anaahad sound. That is a music no one is playing, the "unstruck" sound. It needs no sun or moon, no air or water. It is beyond anything you can touch.

Think of a tune that keeps playing in your head with no speaker at all. The gurmukh, the one who turns toward the Guru's teaching, wakes up to it and knows.

A Question to Sit With

What does deep inner quiet feel like to you?
