Awake and Never Asleep

ਜਾਗਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਸੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
jaagat rahai so kabahu na sovai.
One who remains awake, never sleeps.
ਤੀਨਿ ਤਿਲੋਕ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਪਲੋਵੈ ॥
teen tilok samaaDh palovai.
The three qualities and the three worlds vanish, in the state of Samaadhi.
ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਲੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹੈ ॥
beej mantar lai hirdai rahai.
He takes the Beej Mantra, the Seed Mantra, and keeps it in his heart.

manoo-aa ulat sunn meh gahai. ||5||
Turning his mind away from the world, he focuses on the cosmic void of the absolute Lord. ||5||

In plain words

Whoever stays awake inside never falls asleep.

In deep stillness (samaadhi), the three moods that pull us around and the three worlds all fade away.

They take the seed-word of the One and keep it in the heart.

Turning the mind away from the world, they hold it in the great, still quiet of the One.

Stay awake inside, and the world's noise falls away.
The deeper layer

A person who is awake inside keeps their heart on the One.

Jaagat rahai so kabahu na sovai — the one who stays awake never falls asleep. This is not about bedtime. It means staying alert to what matters most.

In samaaDh, deep stillness, the three worlds and the three gunas fade away. The gunas are the three moods that pull us around: restless, dull and calm. The person keeps the beej mantar, a seed-word, planted in the heart. A seed is small, but it holds a whole tree.

Manoo-aa ulat — the mind turns around, back inward. It settles into sunn, a deep and still quiet, like a lake with no wind.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay awake to what matters most?
