Verse 7 of 10

Awake, Honest, and Full of Love

jaagat rahai na alee-aa bhaakhai.
He remains awake, and he does not lie.
paacha-o indree bas kar raakhai.
He keeps the five sensory organs under his control.
gur kee saakhee raakhai cheet.
He cherishes in his consciousness the Guru's Teachings.
man tan arpai krisan pareet. ||6||
He dedicates his mind and body to the Lord's Love. ||6||

In plain words

Whoever stays awake does not tell lies.

They keep their five senses in hand, instead of being dragged around by them.

They hold the Guru's teaching close in their mind, and give their whole mind and body to loving the One.

Being awake means being honest, in charge of yourself, and full of love.
The deeper layer

Being awake inside shows up in plain, everyday ways.

Jaagat rahai na alee-aa bhaakhai — the awake person does not lie. They keep the five senses in hand, like a rider guiding a horse instead of being dragged by it. They hold the Guru's teaching in mind. And they give mind and body to loving the One.

So being awake here means three things: being honest, being in charge of yourself, and loving the One with your whole heart.

A Question to Sit With

Which is hardest for you: honesty, self-control, or love?
