Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Have mercy, have mercy, dear One, and keep me safe. I come humble, with empty hands, to Your shelter.

I am Your child, and You are my father, my Lord.

Nanak says: forgive me, Your servant, and gather me into You.

When the world stings, you can rest as a child rests with a loving parent.
The deeper layer

Da-i-aa is mercy, tenderness. Deen means poor or humble: coming with empty hands, with nothing to bargain with. After all the slander and unkindness, here is the safest place there is: ham baarik tum pitaa — I am the child, You are the parent. All the world’s stinging is set down in a lap.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go to feel safe and held?
