Verse 4 of 5

Only the One Fills My Mind

ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥
mai avar na ko-ee soojhai boojhai man har jap japa-o japaa-i-aa.
I do not know or understand any other within my mind; I meditate and chant the Lord's Chant.
ਨਾਮਹੀਣ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਨਕਟੇ ਤਿਨ ਘਸਿ ਘਸਿ ਨਕ ਵਢਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
naamheen fireh say naktay tin ghas ghas nak vaDhaa-i-aa. ||3||
Those who lack the Naam, wander in shame; their noses are chopped off, bit by bit. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I know and understand no other in my mind. I chant the One's Name, as the One moves me to chant it.

Those without the Naam wander about in shame, losing face, bit by bit.

A mind full of the One keeps coming back to the Naam.
The deeper layer

When the mind is full of the One, the Name keeps drawing it back.

Mai avar na ko-ee soojhai boojhai — I know and understand no one else. Man har jap japa-o japaa-i-aa — I repeat the Name of the One, and the One moves me to repeat it. Even the holding on is a gift. Think of a song that keeps playing in your head. You did not pick it. It picked you.

Naamheen fireh say naktay — those without the Name wander about in disgrace. The line uses a harsh old saying about lost honor. Its point is a loss of dignity.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you remember your own worth when you feel lost?
