Whatever you desire, you shall receive that reward, and you shall not be afflicted by pain any longer. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O my mind, serve the True Guru, and you will be at peace.

Whatever you wish for, you will receive. And pain will not grip you anymore.

Give yourself to what is true, and peace grows.
The deeper layer

Serve the Guru, and peace follows.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.

Mayray man satgur sayv sukh ho-ee — O my mind, serve the True Guru, and find peace. Satgur means the True Guru, the true teacher. Sayv means to serve. To serve the Guru means to stay close to the Guru's teaching and give yourself to it. Sukh means peace.

The line makes two promises. Jo ichhahu so-ee fal paavhu — whatever you wish for, you will receive. And fir dookh na vi-aapai — the old pain will stop gripping you.

Think of carrying a heavy backpack all day, then finally setting it down at home. The shoulders relax. Staying close to the teaching is like finding the place where you can set the load down.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing that always brings you back to calm?
